About Caroline Busby

Caroline Busby is a self-taught Irish artist and former chartered architect, now living and working near Henley-on-Thames.
Growing up on the North Antrim coast, she developed an early fascination with the movement of the sea, the structure of the landscape and the changing effects of light. Her architectural career later brought a different way of seeing – an appreciation of strong forms, perspective and the relationship between buildings and the landscapes that surround them.
Working predominantly in oils and watercolours, Caroline's contemporary illustrative paintings explore light, place and memory. Her work ranges from the Chiltern hills, beechwoods and towns around her Oxfordshire home to the dramatic coastline of Northern Ireland and places encountered on her travels. She is particularly drawn to the contrast between strong built and natural forms and the softer landscape around them, simplifying what she sees into areas of colour, light, shadow and texture.
Caroline works from Busby K Studio & Gallery in the Chilterns, where her background in architectural drawing continues to influence her distinctive approach. Precise lines have gradually given way to looser marks and planes of colour, creating paintings that capture not simply a literal view, but the atmosphere and memory of a place – views that move you.
