SUBTERRANEAN CISTERN - LONDON
The impressive symmetry of a brick Victorian subterranean cistern located below Finsbury Park in north London. From 1831 there were three deadly outbreaks of cholera which killed nearly 40,000 Londoners, caused by human waste and factory overspill contaminating the waterways and ultimately the drinking water supply. These covered reservoirs for the clean storage of drinking water, were part of Joseph Bazalgette's solution to these epidemics. This image won Architectural Photographer of the Year 2016.
