Artist: Mary Louise Coulouris

Title of Art: Ceilidh

Size: 495 mm x 325 mm

Medium: Copperplate etching and aquatint, 15 of 50 edition.

Description: Ceilidh, 1978. In this rare and colourful print, Coulouris’ semi-realistic figures are important not as individuals, but as part of a social scene. Set in a domestic interior, probably her mother-in-law’s house in Scotland, the mostly older group are eagerly engaged not with music but each other: the standing man, younger, may be singing or reciting. Impromptu and passionate, the scene has little of the formal performance about it, but Coulouris uses the mantelpiece and mirrors in an architectural way to frame the group, almost as a proscenium arch.
