Description: New Well Wynd, 1979. With companion pieces like Hoar Frost (1976) and The Wynds (1979), not shown here, this etching celebrates architecture’s shaping of living spaces and perspectives. Here the vernacular architecture of the town of Linlithgow, west Lothian, near Coulouris’ studio, is the focus. The mediaeval Wynds (New Well, Dog Well and Lion Well) are steep downhill lanes meeting the town’s High Street on its south. Brown inks lend accurate warmth to the rich brown local sandstone, weathered by age and humanised by rounded wall finals and old-fashioned street architecture: two figures also lend intimate, friendly scale to the scene. Stylised trees form part of this appealing townscape, where the road’s perspective draws the viewer in.
