Description: Flower of Scotland, 1981. The hedgerow flowers, closely observed as in Hedgerow and Hedgerow II, are cleverly juxtaposed here with the spread of brand-new housing estates. While potentially impacting such wildlife, estates are appreciated here both for their compact, light-reflecting forms and for their humanity. The idea that the plants and architecture are equally ‘fruits of the land’ is evoked as attractive midtoned inks are used to warm and humanise the estate as subject.
