More information: Flowers in Jam Jar and Blue Shutter, 1994. Light, shade and colour are classically studied here, as in a number of related watercolour works of the same period focusing on a jar of wildflowers. The viewpoint contrasts the coolness and freshness of a Greek interior and the wildflowers themselves with a hot, perhaps even thundery day outside with a deep blue sky, sunlight slanting across a stone terrace and cypresses waving against green slopes. Light on the shutters and through the water is confidently captured without resort to realism: the use of deep blues sets the summery Mediterranean mood and both approaches echo those of painters Coulouris admired, especially Cézanne.
