Sally Castle is a fantastic local print artist, who creates linocut limited edition prints from her studio.
Sally Castle was born in Reading. She graduated from Maidstone College of Art and worked as a designer in London for ten years. Since then, she has worked as an independent designer and illustrator and has designed covers and illustrated over forty books for Two Rivers Press. Sally has a reputation for original hand lettering, and a particular interest in linocut printmaking, environmental lettering and mixed media artwork.
Many of Sally’s works are linoprints, whereby lines are carved into a lino block using a special tool, ink is layered over the remaining surface, then printed on to paper. Sally also makes reduction linoprints, where she carves even more block away after her initial print, then layers on top of the original print in a new colour. You can repeat this process several times, until you run out of block to carve. This technique is so unique, as the block is destroyed in the making of the reduction print.
Sally says, “How fortunate am I that my work is such a pleasure. There are moments when I feel so lucky that the thing that I am doing is ‘work’”

First stage was to cut away anything that I wanted to remain white (the scales on his back etc.) Anything left raised up in relief was inked and printed with yellow ink. I printed ten prints.
Next stage was to cut away anything that I wanted to remain yellow. Anything left raised up was inked and printed with green ink.
The knack is to get the registration spot on… I messed up three and ended up with
seven good prints. It’s a do or die process because once the block is cut away, the stages cannot be repeated!"
