Description: Apple, Avocado, Watermelon, 1995. The trick here is that the fruits in the foreground were wooden replicas of about half-size, probably acquired in Greece, where this picture is likely to have been painted in Coulouris’ Hydra studio. The same models appear in other works and here are accompanied by painted wooden spoons on a natural wood table or board, a grouping enhanced by the secret knowledge that all the objects are of wood. The typical viewpoint from above is here juxtaposed with a different viewpoint on the vase, which is approached straight on. Perhaps the Cubist-like nature of the fruits as painted inspired this multi-planar approach. Interest is developed through the contrasting geometry of the angular vase and round board, the contrast of the flowers with the background shadows and the vibrant colours of the textiles, illuminated by a single broad beam of light.
