LEAD MINE SMOKE FLUE - YORKSHIRE
This stone lined tunnel located just below the surface of the moor near Grassington is part of a lead workings that was in operation between 1849 and 1880. The tunnel was a smoke flue that drew the toxic fumes from the smelting process away from the workers, but it also had a secondary purpose. The hot smoke carried with it small traces of lead which would condense onto the cold stonework of the tunnel walls. So as not to waste any of the lead it could then be dislodged and collected once deposits had built up.
