Description: Three Aspects Central Belt, 1978. In this now rare and exquisitely crafted print with prescient ecological themes, the vibrant industrial landscapes of lowland Scotland, already under threat as economically and environmentally unsustainable, are contrasted with the timeless-seeming natural landscape. Striking images of cows gazing under a line of electricity pylons, the intricate architecture of the Grangemouth oil refinery backlit by its flares, and the same refinery’s cooling towers set among fields on the banks of the river Forth are masterfully coloured in sludgy natural tones which hugely enliven the traditionally monochromatic etching technique. Coulouris was an early experimenter with colour blocks in printing her etchings, and had by this time achieved a good balance of translucency, as also seen in works like Scottish Hedgerow (1976) or Union Canal (1978). In another 20-edition version of the print, Three Aspects Central Belt II, which has a different arrangement of the plates, the lowest register contrasts the medieval royal town of Culross, Fife, on the opposite banks of the river Forth from Grangemouth.
