Description: Fireworks (New Year) 1999, 2004. Many of Coulouris’ works were inspired by the combination of colourful fireworks in the winter sky, snow on the craggy natural and built shapes of Edinburgh Castle rock, and the unity of celebrating crowds. Here she semi-abstractifies the scene with a left-right as well as vertical division of lighting and mood - the crowd in foregrounded silhouette at the bottom, the castle brightly lit as if by day. Bursts and shards of pastel over acrylic further fragment the scene as the fireworks split the sky.
