Description: Night, Shotton Colliery, 1971. This rare early etching draws on Coulouris’ close observations of Durham mining communities at work and play, a project for which she received British Coal Board funding. Her appreciation of and skill in depicting architectural forms is powerfully evident here. The stark colliery buildings are celebrated as part of the everyday optics of working life - a human achievement illuminating their surroundings as the miners work and play through the night-time hours.
