Description: View from the Harbour, 2000. Likely painted at Vlichos beach on the island of Hydra, Greece, this composition isolates part of an inland view rather than the more typical harbour panorama. As always, vertical composition has intense interest, culminating in the silhouette of Hydra’s central peak against an afternoon sky. The steep cliffs are emphasised with sharp downward brushstrokes in acrylic, while the horizontal curve of the beach in enhanced by a mixture of sand into the paint. Buildings clinging to the cliffs or the glancing light off the land are suggested by use of a pure white, while the shadowed harbour buildings are highlighted by a bluer light off the sea, cool and dark in the foreground.
