Description: Coming off Night Shift, 1971. In this rare surviving print from the Durham series of the late 1960s, Coulouris uses blocks of colour in dull tones to suggest the semi-lit, dingy environment of the pit exits, contrasting with the relaxed crowd of off-duty workers. People take up the foreground, while the architectural interest of the pit machinery unashamedly dominates large parts of the rest of the ground, especially in the vertical dimension, recalling works like Scotland’s Oil and Night, Shotton Colliery.
