Description: Ecology Triptych (I-III), 1996. This outsize print shows the scale and freedom of Coulouris’ 1990s print works. Having a deep fascination with and experience in public art (and receiving a Churchill Fellowship to study it in the US in 1995), making a triptych allowed Coulouris to speak with volume on a subject of increasing social interest in the 1990s. Bringing together her lonngstanding printmaking skills and painterly eye for colour, these works (made in both monochrome and full colour editions) present the human form in archaic, vibrant silhouette owing something to her study of ancient Greek myth and Greek vases: a chorus of dancing women hold aloft dramatic masks. Intertwined with the human are both exaggerated images from nature (recalling her public art commissions such as the ‘Soft Island’ for the 1990 Glasgow Garden Festival, as well as the lush vegetation of her Greek paintings) and elements of the industrial landscape. Plant stems become pipework, birds perch on a fountain of petrol, flowers having crying robot-like faces as centres, fish gasp in a river bordered by skyscrapers. We see an ecology where the human is dominant, for better or worse - a subtle angle on the Anthropocene, before it became a talking point.
