Description: Flowers of the Machair, 1982. This striking up-close view of the ‘machair’, or coastal Scottish pasture, represents an early view of Scottish nature as Coulouris settled near Edinburgh. It is certainly novel in the tradition of Scottish landscapes. Unusual viewpoints and compositions were hallmarks of many of her print and painted landscapes, both Greek and Scottish. Here the bold yellow ink suffusing the image is pierced by a slice of red, suggesting the setting winter sun, while a ragged white edge at the base suggests snow.
