Description: Forth Valley, 1982. The visible history and already changing ecology of industrial Britain - here the Forth estuary and valley of central Scotland with their history of steam engine development, coal and shale mining, steelworking and oil refining - proved fascinating to Coulouris as an artist of working communities during the 1970s. Here, creative placing and cutting of the etched plates, in which a semi-stylised perspective from above is taken on the landscape, allows valley-like curves to bound the stark, carefully rendered architecture of the Grangemouth oil refinery (also depicted in work like Three Aspects, Central Belt). The integration of the peaceful agricultural landscape and the working industrial one has disappeared between the 1980s and the present as mines and steelworks closed and fossil fuel use continues to retreat.
