Description: Hull: Cleaning and Scraping, 1968. This rare etching is also held by the Ashmolean collection and represents, with its peers from Coulouris’ solo exhibition of 1968 at the Ferens Gallery in Hull, the first phase of her career as a printmaker concerned with working lives and spaces. The depth of study, application of drawing skill and novel choice of theme - the cleaning and scraping of a fishing trawler in stormy weather - are striking for the period and resonate now, at a time when the fishing industry has greatly declined. The choice of a rich yellow invites the reader into the scene from above, while offering a contextualising view to another trawler on the grey horizon, positioned as between theatre curtains. The use of monochrome in the foreground adds a dramatic stormy light to the business on deck.
