Description: Scotland’s Oil, 1981. This work, now a central piece in Coulouris’ early work, starkly juxtaposes the human and industrial with the natural landscape in ways suggesting harmony and optimism rather than conflict. Coulouris’ draughting skills are to the fore as the intricate detail, the unexpected use of warm pink and yellow tones in the inks, and the circling gulls all give the oil rig human scale, connection and empathy, rather than a threatening aspect.
