Description: Young Miners Dancing on Elvet Bridge, 1971, A very unusual moment captured in experimentally bright ink blocks. Coulouris’ early scribbled drawing style on the plate lends itself to depicting the circular movement of the dancers on a bridge under a streetlamp with hanging baskets somewhat recalling a maypole. That the dancers are miners is surprising, but all-male circle dances were a centuries-old folk custom associated with mining communities in Country Durham, where the artist recorded local communities at work and at leisure on gala and festival days in the late 1960s. Her interest in depicting working communities included exploring the enjoyable aspects of working life: dancing and music were constant interests of her own and appear as themes in many of her works.
