Class topic: Stillness and Storms: Exploring Contrasts of Winter

Guest Tutors: Francesca Vullo and Jonathan Llewellyn

As autumn gives way to winter, the landscape opens up: bare, beautiful and exposed. Explore winter’s contrasts — stillness and storm, cold and warmth, wilderness and retreat — and how weather shapes our emotions. Working from intimate to expressive scale, experiment with painting, drypoint, etching and intaglio to create your own winter response.

Inspired by Friedrich’s contemplative winter landscapes and Eardley’s exhilarating storms to Hockney’s skeletal trees, we’ll explore how artists have captured winter’s stillness, structure and wildness — using their work as inspiration for our own response to the season.

About the Tutors: Francesca and Jonathan bring together complementary backgrounds in fine art, design and architecture. Francesca is a professional artist, lecturer and creative therapist, while Jon is an architect, artist and urban sketcher. Together they share a passion for creativity as a source of mindfulness, reflection and wellbeing, encouraging everyone to discover and enjoy their own creative potential.
