Description: Meteora I, 1982. Part of a group of Greek landscapes and cityscapes (Athens, Delphi, Knossos) developed following Coulouris’ discovery of her roots, and of a place to indulge her love of colour and light, in Greece from the late 1990s. The work shows the spectacular monasteries of Meteora in the Peloponnese, perched on top of natural rock columns. Pastels are used to reproduce the glancing white light of the region, and new techniques of interest to Coulouris during the 2000s make an appearance, including marbling and spattering of the paper and the use of scribbly pen and ink for architectural shapes toned and lit by watercolour overwashes.
