Description: Tam’s Loup, 1980. An abstractly-patterned frame continuous with the composition was a technique Coulouris returned to in later (mostly Mediterranean) works in pastel and watercolour. Here her focus, as in many of her other steel etchings of the 1970s, is a working industrial landscape - the mines and quarries of Lanarkshire in central Scotland near which her studio was located. The landmark crags depicted here appear in the local folk tale of a sinful man (Tam) who rode over the edge while inebriated. The shapes of industrial machinery lend themselves well to Coulouris’ draughtsmanship, which celebrates them even in the absence of their human manipulators - they are both symbols and agents in themselves.
