Description: Shrines III, 2002. In this striking work of her later Greek career, Coulouris positions three panels depicting variants of the wayside shrines which literally and figuratively populate Greece’s roadsides. Many represent real church buildings in miniature, including through use of the same materials. Coulouris’ skills in drawing are to the fore, with confident layering of an appealing range of colours in the lithograph. The midtone mauve suggests perhaps old photographs or newspapers which might record or memorialise the passage of these lives, while the gold brings warmth and life to these highly personal memorials.
